HRA is a racer owned and operated business head quartered in beautiful Monterey, CA. 

We have in-depth knowledge and experience in building, tuning and driving a wide variety of race cars especially Spec Miatas and other Mazdas.

We provide Spec Miata's built by Barry Hartzel.  Barry has owned and operated Hartzel Automotive in Monterey since July 1984, specializing in Volvo, Saab, Jaguar and Mazda repair and maintenance.  Below is a summary of Barry's racing experience over the past 30 years.

1972 - present
    • NASA NorCal HPDE Director
2002
  • 8 wins and 2 second place finishes in 10 SM races
  • 2nd in the inaugural MazdaSpeed Cup 2002 SM race at LSIR 
  • Built 2 of the top 3 SM race cars for the MazdaSpeed Cup 2002 LSIR race and consulted on the other one.
 


2001

  • NASA NorCal SM Champion
  • Ran half season in SCCA SFR as SM, other half ITA
  • Placed 2nd in the SCCA SFR PCRRC race
  • Built 6 SM race cars
2000
  • Working with Larry Oka, built and raced the first Spec Miata on the west coast -- the car is still actively racing
  • Built own SM race car
  • SCCA SFR SM Champion
  • Won the SCCA SFF PCRRC race
  • Set all central California SM lap records
 


1999

  • Did not race
 


1998 

  • Ran only one race all year and won NASA Pro7 race at LSIR
 


1997

  • Placed 2nd in the NASA NorCal Pro7 Championship
 


1996

  • SCCA SFR ITC Champion
  • NASA NorCal Pro7 Champion
  • NASA NorCal PS3 Champion
  • Set track record in ITC at LSIR
1995
  • First full season of racing since 1979 running a Larry Oka Datsun 510
  • Won the SCCA SFR PCRRC race in ITC (also won "Driver of the Weekend")
  • Placed 4th overall in SFR ITC Championship points
 


1994

  • First time back in a race car since 1979
  • Completed the SCCA SFR Double Driver's School
  • Earned SCCA SFR Regional License
  • Winner of first race at Portland
 


1983-1993

  • No racing activities
 


1982-1983

  • Worked as a crew member and subsequently crew chief for the Brooks Racing Thunderbird driven by John Bauer and Bruce Jenner in both the SCCA Trans Am and IMSA Camel GT series
 


1979

  • Competed in USAC's Mini Indy series for Super Vees
  • Best result: Qualified 2nd to Geoff Brabham and finished 5th at Texas World Speedway
 


1978

  • First year in SCCA National Competition.  Built and maintained FP MG Midget
  • Winner, Central Division FP Championship
  • Winner, Robert Collins Memorial Trophy by the Detroit Region SCCA
  • Second Place, SCCA National Championship, Road Atlanta
  • Nominee for SCCA Amateur Rookie of the Year
  • 6 outright wins, 3 Super National wins, 2 track records
 


1977

  • First year in SCCA Regional Racing
  • Winner, SCCA Central Division Regional Championship, "F" Production Championship at Waterford Hills, Michigan.  15 wins in 18 starts, 1 Waterford Track Record
  • Ranked 4th of Waterford top drivers
 


1976

  • Driving plus maintenance of MG Midget
  • Set a track record at Waterford Hills
  • Won two races at other tracks, first time on the tracks.
 


1975

  • Novice Year as a Driver for a "B"  Sports Racing Car at Waterford Hills
  • Won 8 of 10 races
  • Set track record, Waterford Hills
 


1973

  • Crew Chief, "E" Production Porsche
  • Won Class Championships
  • Set the "E" Production Record
  • Won, Waterford Hills Championship
  • Won, Detroit News Trophy
 


1972

  • Crew Member, "E" Production Porsche
  • Developed a racing Porsche that finished 2nd in the Waterford Hills "E" Production Championship
